Welaka with Kids: 8 Family-Friendly Stops on the St. Johns

Bringing the kids to Welaka, Florida? Here are 8 easy, fun, family-friendly stops on the St. Johns River — most are free or cheap.

Welaka is a small town. But it has a lot for families. There are short trails, free aquariums, calm river spots, and a real ferry boat. Most stops cost little or nothing. Here are eight of the best.

1. Welaka National Fish Hatchery & Aquarium

This is the best free stop in town. The aquarium has 16 tanks full of fish you can find in Florida rivers and lakes. Big-mouth bass. Catfish. Bluegill. Some tanks even have alligators and turtles.

  • Where: Off US Highway 17 on County Road 309
  • Hours: Aquarium open 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. every day. Grounds open dawn to dusk.
  • Cost: Free
  • Kid tip: Save 30 to 45 minutes for the aquarium. The fish are big and easy to see.

There is also an observation tower outside. Look for bald eagles, herons, and ospreys near the ponds.

2. Mud Spring Trail

This is a 1.7-mile loop in Welaka State Forest. It is flat and shaded. Most families finish it in 45 minutes to an hour.

The big payoff is Mud Spring itself. It is a small, clear, blue-green pool. Kids can sit on a bench and watch the fish below the surface.

  • Where: 720 CR 309 (the visitor center)
  • Cost: $2 per person, day-use fee
  • Kid tip: Pack bug spray. The mosquitoes here are no joke.

3. The Beecher Run Nature Trail

If Mud Spring sounds like too much, this is the easier one. The Beecher Run trail is short and flat. It runs around the old hatchery ponds. The trees are tall and the path is shady.

  • Where: At the Welaka National Fish Hatchery
  • Cost: Free
  • Kid tip: Pair it with the aquarium. Both are at the same place.

4. Bryant's Wharf

This is the spot for a snack break by the river. It has restrooms, picnic tables, a floating dock, and great views. There is also a kayak launch.

  • Where: 1A Palmetto Street, Welaka
  • Cost: Free
  • Kid tip: Pack a picnic lunch. Eat at the dock and watch the boats.

5. The Welaka Downtown Park

This park is right in town. It has space to run, picnic tables, and river views. It's a good place to let kids stretch their legs after a drive.

  • Where: Downtown Welaka
  • Cost: Free
  • Kid tip: Pair this with a quick walk along the river.

6. A ride on the Fort Gates Ferry (when it reopens)

Most kids have never been on a ferry. This one is small, slow, and great for a first ride. It carries cars across the St. Johns River. The crossing takes about 10 minutes.

Heads up: the landing is closed right now. The team is working to reopen it. Watch the Fort Gates Ferry Facebook page for updates so you can plan a trip the week it returns.

When the ferry runs again, here is what to know:

  • Where: Fort Gates Ferry Road, near Pomona Park
  • Hours: 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. every day but Tuesday
  • Cost: $10 per crossing (cash only)
  • Kid tip: The wait can be long. Bring snacks and a book.

The other side is the Ocala National Forest. If you cross with the car, you can drive to Salt Springs for a quick swim.

7. Watch for manatees in cooler months

Manatees are big, slow, gentle river animals. In the cooler months, some use Welaka and Mud Springs as resting spots. You can sometimes see them from the boat ramps or from Bryant's Wharf.

  • Where: Try Bryant's Wharf and the public boat ramps
  • Best time: November through March
  • Kid tip: Stay quiet and still. Never touch a manatee. It is also against federal law to touch them.

If you don't see one in Welaka, you can take a day trip to Blue Spring State Park (about 1.5 hours south). It is the most reliable manatee viewing spot in north Florida.

8. Fishing from shore

You don't need a boat to fish here. The Welaka Public Boat Ramp on Elm Street has a dock you can fish from. Bryant's Wharf is also a good shore-fishing spot. You can catch bluegill, catfish, and sometimes a small bass.

  • Where: Welaka Public Boat Ramp (9199 Elm Street) or Bryant's Wharf
  • Cost: Free to fish from shore
  • Rules: Anyone 16 or older needs a Florida fishing license. You can buy one online before you go.
  • Kid tip: Bring small hooks, worms or crickets, and a bobber. Bluegills are easy to catch and a great first fish.

A simple kid-friendly day plan

If you want a smooth one-day visit:

  • Morning: Welaka National Fish Hatchery + the Beecher Run trail
  • Lunch: Picnic at Bryant's Wharf
  • Afternoon: Mud Spring Trail or a pontoon ride with Welaka Boat Rentals
  • Evening: Sunset on the river

That is a full day, easy on small legs.

What to pack

A few things make Welaka days easier with kids:

  • Bug spray (do not skip this)
  • Sunscreen
  • Hats and water bottles
  • A small backpack with snacks
  • A change of clothes (just in case)
  • Cash for the ferry, if you go
  • A Florida fishing license for adults who want to fish

One last thought

Welaka is not a theme park. There are no big rides or loud shows. What it has is a calm river, easy trails, friendly people, and a slower pace. That is rare in Florida. Kids notice it. So do parents.

Pack light. Take your time. And let the river do the work.
