Welaka is about 41 miles from St. Augustine. The drive takes around 55 minutes. That makes it a perfect day trip. You can leave after breakfast, fit in a hike and lunch, and be home by dinner.
Here is the plan I'd give a friend.
The drive: Route 207 is your friend
From St. Augustine, take Route 207 west. It runs straight to the Welaka area. The road passes farms, small towns, and pine woods. There are no toll roads on this route. Fill up your gas tank before you leave, since stations get sparse west of Hastings.
The halfway point is Hastings, FL. If you want a stretch break, stop there.
Morning: Walk the Mud Spring Trail (1.7 miles, easy)
Aim to get to Welaka State Forest by 9 or 10 a.m. The Mud Spring trailhead is at 720 CR 309. There is a $2 per person day-use fee.
The Mud Spring Trail is a 1.7-mile loop. It is flat and easy. Most people finish it in 30 minutes to an hour. The trail goes through pine woods and over small wooden bridges. The payoff is Mud Spring — a small, clear, blue-green pool. You can sit on a bench and watch fish swim below.
Bring water and bug spray. The dirt parking lot is across from the visitor center.
Midday: The Welaka National Fish Hatchery
This stop is free. It is also a hit with kids.
The hatchery is south of Palatka, just off US Highway 17 on County Road 309. It has a 16-tank public aquarium. The aquarium is open 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. every day. The grounds stay open from dawn to dusk.
You can also walk the short Beecher Run Nature Trail. It runs along old fish ponds fed by Beecher Spring. There is an observation tower for bird-watching. Bald eagles and herons are often easy to spot.
Plan for about an hour here.
Lunch: Shrimp R Us & More
Shrimp R Us & More sits at 765 3rd Avenue in Welaka. It is the spot locals send you to. The menu has fried shrimp, crab cakes, gator tail, fish sandwiches, and burgers. The tiki bar has live music most weekends.
If you want a sit-down meal in a real Old Florida spot, this is it.
Afternoon: River time
After lunch, head to the water. You have a few good choices.
- Walk Bryant's Wharf. It is at 1A Palmetto Street. There are restrooms, picnic spots, a kayak launch, and great river views. Bring a folding chair.
- Rent a pontoon boat from Welaka Boat Rentals. They sit right on the St. Johns River and are easy to reach in either direction. A pontoon is the easy way to see the river without bringing your own boat. Call ahead to lock in your time.
- Rent a kayak if you have time. Welaka sits on a wide, slow stretch of the St. Johns River. It is a calm paddle for most skill levels.
A quick note about the Fort Gates Ferry: the landing is closed right now. The team is working to reopen it. Until then, plan to enjoy the river from the Welaka side. We will update this page when the ferry is back in service.
What to skip on a tight day
A day trip is short. Here are the things to save for another time:
- Croaker Hole Spring. It is about 3.5 miles southwest of Welaka in Little Lake George. You need a boat to reach it. Save it for a fishing trip or a longer stay.
- A long Bartram Trail hike. The William Bartram Loop in Welaka State Forest is 5 miles. It is great. But it takes 2 to 3 hours and will eat your afternoon.
- A second town. Some plans pack in Crescent City and Palatka. On a day trip, Welaka alone is plenty.
- Fort Gates Ferry. The landing is closed for now. Skip it on this trip and come back once it reopens.
Heading home: wait for the sunset
Do not rush out. The sunsets in Welaka are the best part of the day. The sky turns orange, pink, and gold over the river. It is a moment you do not want to miss.
So stay a little longer. Two easy ways to catch the magic:
- The Boat Bar at Welaka Lodge. Right on the river at 1001 Front Street. Grab a drink, sit by the water, and watch the sun drop.
- Renegades on the River in Crescent City. A short drive south. Drinks, food, live music, and big river views.
Once the sun is down, you will be glad you waited. St. Augustine is about an hour back. The drive home is quiet and easy after dark.
