Little Lake George Croaker Hole

Croaker Hole Spring is located about 3.5 miles southwest of Welaka in Little Lake George, which is part of the St. Johns River.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission names the Croaker Hole as one of the river's thermal refuges: striped bass and sunshine bass seek cool water here as the river warms and congregate at the spring, where anglers anchor and fish live bait. Largemouth bass, bluegill and redear sunfish are caught along this stretch too.

Anglers also report catfish and the occasional saltwater visitor pushing up on the tide. Those are local reports rather than a fisheries inventory.

Croaker Hole is a relatively deep, small-diameter hole in the bottom of the St. Johns River. The river is generally about 5 to 9 feet deep in this area, except in the immediate vicinity of Croaker Hole, where it plunges to a depth of about 48 feet.
